One idea that probably comes immediately to the mind of a westerner when hearing the word illiterate, “Why not just teach them how to read?”

This site specifically is targeting folks in the Arab World or Middle East North Africa regions. There are many non Arabs in these areas such as the Kurds, Turkmen, Berber, Assyrians, Armenians, Korbati, and others…

Many of these minority groups have been oppressed by the Arabs. The thought of using Arabic to some would be offensive. Read more…

When I started noticing that the people group I was working with was not understanding Arabic, I decided to try and get some audio bibles. I thought this would be an easy task. I imagined that there would be many cheap providers of audio bibles that I could get and easily give away.

Over the next week, I will be putting up a series of articles to describe different ideas on how to reach out to unlettered people. I will be writing about some different ideas and how they have worked with a minority group that I am working with in the Middle East, that are more than 99% illiterate.

Safety in the Middle East

This past week there was an explosion roughly a few blocks from my house. It was a car bombing, here in Beirut that most people have heard about. As a result, a lot of people ask me, “Don’t you feel afraid?”

Short answer, “no”. If you look at crime rates in the Middle East, and then compare them to those of the States or South Africa, you will see quickly that a lot less people die from violence in Lebanon, than in those countries.

For example in Houston read this report. You will notice that thousands of people are being murdered per year. Here in this report you can see how Lebanon ranks among the world in regards to people who die from “Murder” etc,

A tough time to be a missionary

As a result of the protests going on in the Middle East, it has become quite a bit more difficult, in an already difficult land to preach the Gospel.

Many people are simply afraid to be seen as “An American”. It can be difficult, even for non American missionaries in the Middle East, as many associate the Evangelical Church with the United States.
